Bon Appetit magazine is one of the magazines that I pay newsstand prices for even though I pretty much know that as soon as I see the new photogenic cover dish that I’m g oing to be forking over the $4.50 plus sales tax. I really do need to subscribe.
The September BA though inspired me. I have a gazillion, okay 13, sticky note strips so that I can easily find the dishes I want to try. I bought my copy of the magazine less than a week ago and already have tried 4 of the recipes.
First there were the sweet pepper pickles courtesy of Orangette. They were so pretty and so delicious.
Then, due to an abundance of cucumbers, and accompanying a mental note that multiple cucumber plants really aren’t a practical idea, there was the Cucumber Agua Fresca. I have to say that mine seems way greener than theirs.
Dinner this evening was the Spiced Pear Flatbreads with Goat Cheese and Mustard Sauce though, due to some ingredient restrictions, I had to change this one a bit. I had to use red pears instead of bartletts. I omitted the aleppo pepper because I didn’t have any. The blue cheese, I’m pretty sure, came from cow milk, not goat milk. The mustard sauce was prepared as instructed.
And, I made the lemon ice cream which was rich and inviting and very, very lemony. I want to try this recipe later with blood oranges as the citrus. It is pictured above with Chocloate-Red Wine Cake from September’s Food and Wine magazine, for which I also paid newsstand price.
Yes, I will get my money’s worth out of this issue, but still, I should subscribe.
