Dear Mr. President, I do not appreciate your presence in my dreams. Let me not be unclear, it is one dream, recurring.
Why do you stand on my childhood bed beneath the canopy in your shoes and dress socks, cowboy boxers and light blue pressed shirt, …
Tricky Dick
I wonder about the women who had
made love to Richard Nixon. What
did they smell like? Lemon drops
and powder? Did they make him sweat?
How did they win him? With a thermos
of soup? A long suggestive stare?
A demure glance? Or did he seduce them
with his dark, dark hair, his lawyer’s suit?
Or was it his eyes, dark and weary? Did
they seek to save him from himself,
salve him somehow, these women?
What did they think during Watergate?
Did they long for him again, yearn to hide
him somewhere dark and warm? And
how do they feel when we think of him?
Applesauce
Since the weather started to have that fall-is-coming edge to it, I have been thinking about applesauce Making applesauce was one of my birthday goals last year, but sadly (read: for no darned good reason), I didn’t make any. So when I checked the ad for the store where I do a bunch of my… Continue reading Applesauce
Banana bread (split style)
I found myself with three overripe bananas who seemed to have sent a special express message to any fruit flies in the zip code. And I had just reorganized my kitchen area. I hate wasting food. These factors combined to form this banana bread. I could use the bananas, test the new setup and not… Continue reading Banana bread (split style)
Pretzels (aka goal 33)
Last year one of my birthday goals was to make pretzels. I didn’t make it happen, so I carried the goal over. As I looked this year’s goals, the 33 things I want to accomplish by my 33rd birthday, I couldn’t bear the thought of having another year go by without completing this simple task,… Continue reading Pretzels (aka goal 33)
Frank
The other day after picking up the little guy, we went to Value World. I find myself wanting to go here when I’ve been sewing to see if there is anything in there that I want to turn into something else. But then I am overwhelmed by all of the rows and the occasionally aggressive… Continue reading Frank
Cento
I was minding my own business, scattering my mind through clicks through the internet when I found a cento-writing contest. Based on the context of what I was looking at, I knew it would be a poem. Because I’m trying not to forget that once I wrote every single day, I decided to consider the… Continue reading Cento
Carrot butter
I found myself with a bunch of carrots hanging out in the back of the fridge threatening to be forgotten. I am really, really trying to waste less and use more of the things that I buy. Problem is is that I change my mind between grocery shopping and actual cooking. The by product of… Continue reading Carrot butter
Wallet
I have been looking for the perfect wallet for years. So today, to celebrate the beginning of Spring Break, I decided to make one. This is also a part of my decision to make sure that I don’t spend the entirety of the spring break just looking around on the internet. I am totally capable… Continue reading Wallet
Harissa
I have been meaning to make harissa for years. Literally. I came across the recipe around 5-6 years ago on this blog. Then Alex got sick, I had to go to the store for some things for him and I remembered the recipe. So I bought the things that I needed. This is one of… Continue reading Harissa
