Following his lead

Alex loves to draw.

Actually, Alex loves to draw and do other things with his hands.

It is fun to see all of that unfold. It is also quite telling to see how he thinks about his work. The most interesting, no, the most surprising part of all that is that he thinks he’s copying me.

Funny part about that, is that I’m sort of copying him. That’s not exactly accurate. But I see that he has a lot of creativity, and I want him to see examples of living creatively as he grows up.

So, the other night I was in my bedroom doing something or other…I can’t even remember. I heard Alex tooling around in his room. I asked him what he was doing, and he was working on a project. Surprise, surprise. I invited him to work on it in my room. I happened to be sitting beside a drawing pad…so, when he got to my room, I drew a circle with cross hatch marks on it and asked him to add something to it. Several minutes later, we had the picture you see. His additions are mostly black, mine are all orange.

Alex had such a good time. If he were a little doggie, his tail would have been wagging him throughout this experience.

After this, he showed me something very similar that they do in school.

At the end of all this, my sweet boy said something about liking to have “quality time” with me.

I’m so glad it all went down like this, and I need to remember to continue to make this sort of time.
