Beer for beginners

I may have created a monster.

About two months ago, it was my gentleman caller’s birthday. After a few digging conversations, I decided that I was going to get him a beer brewing kit for his birthday.

Funny thing is that as much cooking as I do, I never really expected to be an accomplice in the brewing of beer. Wait, that sounds like making a beer is a crime. This isn’t Prohibition! Perhaps we’ve just been watching too many episodes of Boardwalk Empire.

I find the process of making beer a lot like that of making bread. The more you learn about it by doing, the less mysterious (aka scary) the process is. I am sure that there will be mishaps along the way, but this has been a fun learning project. It has also  made us look at used beer bottles differently. We have essentially set up a home reuse operation.

The maiden batch was an Irish stout. It was tasty, a respectable first-brewing experience. We now have two other beers in various stages of their development, a wheat beer and an ESB.

An adventure begins.
