Old Hickory

Face-to-face with a twenty dollar bill,
You imagine those bony fingers first separating
your hair, gently, then less so, grasping,
leveraging your head groundward. You can
smell him, all sweat and adventure, acrid.
You inhale deeply. You feel the stones
beneath you, your face in the grass, the dirt.
He bites. You surrender beneath the
crush of teeth on your shoulder. He stops, coughs
You look toward him just in time to see him spit
out mouthful of blood. Yours or his,
you don’t know. Then you feel those hands
Working at the bottom of your dress roughly
rolling it upwards to get at you. You smell him
more. You smell determination. Conquest.

You feel those bony hands, taking.

Smoothie Goal

One of my birthday goals this year was to try 26 smoothies. Sometimes, a gal just needs a project. And sometimes a gal has to do something to make sure that all of her projects aren’t about cake. You see, the thing is that I love being in my warm bed, the heat from my… Continue reading Smoothie Goal

In an open letter to her dream mind,

“I don’t even know what to say about you. I don’t like dreams where I am pregnant, especially when it is very obvious, yet I am trying to hide it from people. I especially don’t like such dreams when they cut to a scene where I have an assignment to juice 300 lemons using a […]

James Monroe was the final founders-generation president. He was also the fourth Virginian to hold the nation’s highest office. Monroe is perhaps best known for the Monroe Doctrine.
